There is a version of video production where you film everything, hand it to an editor, and hope. It produces a lot of footage and not much film.
We work the other way round. Before a camera is booked we know roughly what the finished piece looks like: how it opens, what carries the middle, where it ends. That sounds restrictive and it is the opposite. Knowing the shape means the shoot day is spent getting the shots that matter rather than covering every possibility.
It also changes what happens when something goes wrong, and something always does. Weather turns, a location falls through, someone is late. When you know what a scene is for, you can find another way to get it. When you are shooting blind, you only discover the gap in the edit, weeks later, when the crew has gone home.
The practical version for you: you see a rough shape before the shoot, and you see selects while it is still cheap to change your mind.
